Creating screencast videos
I get asked A LOT about online training.
How to create it, how to sell it, how to engage learners.
And it's important for authors to think widely -- our content can be used in multiple ways, and (personally) I find the training process hugely rewarding.
So, I want to share this short video I created to help you create screencast videos for your online training -- or indeed anything else.
I find them easy to create, you don't need a lot of tech, and you can use them on your site -- for opt-in incentives, on YouTube, or, as we said, as the foundation of your online training content.
Forgive the references to Udemy (other online training platforms are available ;)). I initially created the video for the Udemy instructor community.
I hope it gives you some pointers to just get started with video training. And, remember, online courses are a perfect complement to and a great next step from your book!

Camtasia (the PC version)
Screenflow (there is a version of Camtasia for the Mac but I prefer Screenflow)
Hosting the videos:
Whether you want them publicly available on your blog, on a post like this, or behind a membership site with paid access.
EasyVideoPlayer (this is a great tool for hosting and managing your videos)
Amazon S3 video hosting
YouTube (good place to start if you are new at this and you can make videos 'unlisted' if you want to keep them private to your community)
Wistia (great analytics)
Selling online training:
This is a big topic but right now if you've bought one of my online training programmes then you've probably done so through one of these platforms. (by the way, these are not recommendations -- check out the features that suit you before you decide which one to use.)
Just like amazon for your book, you can put your course in a marketplace and be paid a royalty share based on how many you sell. Everything is managed for you and the lower royalty share reflects this. Good if you are starting out but, remember, marketplaces drive price down, so not always the best place to build your brand credibility.
There are so many popping up all the time you'll need to see what is current -- it's a rapidly evolving space.
My favourite way to deliver online training. Your platform will host your training and act as a shopping cart and payment processor. You own and control it all but you don't need to run the tech. However, there's usually a monthly fee to pay so it's not for everyone.
Your own site:
I don't love this because it means you manage all the tech yourself. Good if you have support, and if you want total control of branding and the customer experience.
You can use wordpress with a specialised learning management theme and sometimes a membership plugin. You'll need everything that goes along with that -- hosting and design etc. There might be monthly or one-off fees involved and it's usually more affordable than a hosted platform -- but the trade-off (in my experience) is time. As with anything new, you just have to make a decision and dive in. And the ability to create screencast video like this, just means we have more ways of reaching more people. Keep the end in mind and you'll be fine.
